Rajeev Kumar Mamata Banerjee, BJP leader

Is Rajeev Kumar being helped by a BJP leader in UP?

The task for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is only getting tougher. Hundreds of key party men’s exodus on a daily basis is sure giving Ms Banerjee sleepless nights. On top of that, the government is hell bent on dragging its feet in the case between Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and former Kolkata top cop Rajeev Kumar.

On the one hand, the disbelief in party while on the other the government may be serious trouble if the ex-top cop is placed under arrest by the CBI. In the meantime, Ms Banerjee government has written to the Home Ministry to release Kumar who was appointed ADG CID of the West Bengal police.

West Bengal Govt reinstates 11 IPS officers; will cops’ loyalties be divided now?

It may be recalled that Home Ministry asked Rajeev Kumar to report to Ministry of Home Affairs after Election Commission replaced him following the vandalisation of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar during BJP president Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata. As per protocol, without the release from Home Ministry, Rajeev Kumar cannot assume charge of ADG CID in the state police.

Interestingly, when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government is trying to bring Kumar back in the state police, Kumar may be already in a different mood who had been in the eye of the storm for quite some time.

On Monday, instead of presenting himself following the CBI summons, Kumar skipped the summons and went to his home town Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. A CID officer carried a letter from Kumar to the CBI office in Salt Lake’s CGO Complex and asked for a week-long leave citing ‘personal reasons’.

The Uttar Pradesh angle

Now with CBI tightening its noose to place Kumar under arrest, the IPS officer is believed to in talks with a BJP leader to wriggle himself out of the trouble. According to information in Kolkata, Rajeev Kumar’s uncle is a well-known politician in Uttar Pradesh and is also a member of the Yogi Adityanath cabinet.

Sources say that Kumar had been in touch with his uncle to escape CBI for the time being. But the question arises as to why did Kumar resort to a BJP politician when the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was doing her best to save him? Is he trying to find shelter in BJP? Has he understood that it’s beyond Ms Banerjee to save him from the current mess?

All these questions will be answered soon. For more keep a watch on this space.
